Tony Devey grew up in East London surrounded by the cabinet and wood carving industries. After completing a full carpentry and joinery apprenticeship he started a successful business specialising in period bespoke joinery.

Alongside the business Tony has a strong passion for vintage cars and has acquired a varied collection over the years, all of which have been restored by him.

As contacts in the classic car world grew so did the requests for automobile work and before long the business evolved into a fully equipped and experienced coachwork company.

Smithy's Coachworks specialise in the reconstruction and restoration of ash frame bodied cars, shooting brakes, commercial vehicles and even the odd vintage caravan.

The starting point may be the remains of the original car, drawings or just a photograph. We’ll fully discuss your project and are able to help with design and workshop drawings. In the past we have even made up plywood mock ups to help a customer visualise the finished project.

The majority of our bodies are made from English or American Ash which, to have as little impact on the environment as possible, we only source from sustainably managed forests. Only the best grades and properly seasoned wood is used throughout our work.

We can repair or reconstruct all ash framed cars from a boat tailed Bentley to a Ford Special. If your starting your project from a rolling chassis or in need of just a few isolated repairs we can be of help.

American or British, the wooden estate car is making a come back of late. Why not? Stylish, practical and a little piece of history that will never be repeated.

Whether your Station Wagon is a factory built beauty, a war time utility or even one that never was, we can restore, repair or renew that rotten timber wagon and bring it back to it's former glory. With masses of reference books and enthusiasm we could even convert that boring four door into something special.

At the workshop we usually only work on one or perhaps two given projects at any one time. This gives the customer the dedication and attention their vehicle requires.

As all projects that we take on are usually bespoke one-off commissions it's always best that you contact us via email or phone to discuss your project needs directly.

For full body builds we are usually able to give a firm, no obligation, quotation.

Should your project be a familiar body shape or something we have worked on before, we can quite often come up with an approximate estimate quickly.

Repairs are harder to provide a fixed quote for, even more so if the work is not fully exposed. In this situation we would quote an hourly rate, keeping you fully informed of progress to avoid any surprises or disappointments.
